Things to Remember When Choosing Your Fishing Reel
July 31st, 2007 at 12:57 am by FreshAire in Fishing ProductsFor those who pursue fishing as a sport and for just for something you do on fishing vacations, one of the most important tackle choices is the fishing reel. You want to be sure that you choose a quality reel that will make fishing easy and enjoyable. Picking out the wrong fishing reel can be lamentable; in fact, it can be utterly frustrating to fish all day with a reel that you hate.
With so many different reels to choose from you may be wondering how to find the best reel for you. Sometimes when there are so many choices it is easy to become indecisive and you end up choosing the wrong reel when, if given a little direction, you might have made a better choice. In truth, there are a great deal of things to consider when picking your fishing reel, and the following are three great tips that can help you make the very best fishing reel choice.
Tip #1 – Consider the Manufacturer – Sometimes a high-priced “name brand” is just a way for the manufacturer to get more money for his product. However, when you are picking out a fishing reel, you will want to consider the manufacturer of the reel. Stay away from unknown brand names. Chances are if you have never heard of the brand it is not one that is reliable. This is not always the case, but I’ve found it to be true 99% of the time where fishing reels are concerned. It is usually best to go with a well known brand in order to get the best reel. A few manufacturers that offer a good product include Okuma, Daiwa, Quantum, and Pflueger. I bet you’ve heard of these manufacturers as they are companies that have been around for some time and are known for their excellent fishing tackle.
Tip #2 – Don’t Be a Cheapskate! I love to save money. But, when it comes to picking out a good fishing reel I learned I can’t be too cheap or I’ll be sorry. If you just must save money on something — don’t try to save on your reel. and make sure that you get a quality one. That $9.95 reel may bring lots of pleasure to your 8 year old child — but, you want like it. I promise you that! While you don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars on a reel, you really should expect to pay more than $25. Those that are around $50 – $75 will bring you even more fishing pleasure. Just don’t skimp here. Eat bologna sandwiches and hotdogs to save money instead!
Tip #3 – Check the Reel’s Ball Bearings – No matter what you pay for the reel make sure you check the amount of ball bearings in a fishing reel. How do you do this? Read the description of the fishing reel; it will usually tell you how many ball bearings are in it. Test the reel. Does it have too much play? If so, put it back up and find another. Too much play is a bad thing and the more ball bearings you have, the less play you have to worry about. I have found that a reel that has at least six ball bearings or more will have little or no play in it at all.
Keep in mind that having a fishing reel that you really love is important when you are going fishing. The right reel can provide you with hours of fishing pleasure; the wrong reel can be an exercise in futility. You’ll spend so much time untangling the line you will not enjoy your fishing trip and you’ll never be able to tell your great fishing stories of the big ones that didn’t get away.
Keep these pointers in mind when you are choosing your fishing reel, and you should find a great fishing reel for your fishing needs.
