Spend your Alabama vacation with a visit to St. Stephens Historical Park. Learn about the first capital of Alabama which isn’t there any more. Enjoy the 200 acre park with its walking tails, 90 acre quarry lake and white sand beaches. Participate in the dig to find the history of the community that has been taken over by the weather and erosion over time.

When the town was built it was built on the bluffs of the Tombigbee River. Since the river got shallow and had rocky shoals boats couldn’t go up river further so people built here. When shallow draft boats were built and could continue up the river the town eventually succumbed to the plight of death. Not only had people found a way to move on, the capital had been moved to another community and then a yellow fever outbreak wiped out a number of the citizens.

Now there is an archaeological dig going to uncover the secrets that time and weather have kept hidden. A limestone building was uncovered with its treasures of artifacts during one portion of the dig. Now the goal is to unearth enough of the community to be able to complete a map of the area. Volunteers as well as students are welcome to help with the dig so plan to participate while on your Alabama vacation.
