Why Abuse Victims Are Finding The Strength To Leave The Abuse
December 28th, 2009 at 06:30 am by FreshAire in Government & Non-profitFor decades, women have been ashamed to come forward if they were the victims of domestic abuse or a crime done against them like a rape for fear of being ashamed or that the abuser would come and have revenge on them for going to the authorities. This stigma has been evolving throughout the years with women finding courage to fight against this type of crime. Through different programs, shelters and having the assistance of a Las Vegas domestic abuse attorney or a Las Vegas domestic violence attorney, they are beginning to fight back and are not ashamed.
Most cities have created wonderful programs for women that have expereinced abuse at home to assist them to get back on their feet after they finally can’t take it anymore and get away from the situation they were in. There are women’s shelters that deal specifically with battered women that help them with counseling, finding employment, giving them with a safe place to live until they are well enough emotionally to be on their own. They also help these women with the care of their children which they may have had to bring with them when they escaped the abuse.
Women are finally realizing they should be treated with respect and not to be ashamed that they were in an abusive relationship. A big reason women wait so long to leave their abuse is that they believe the abuser will change when they tell, they choose to believe them until the next abusive episode. Another reason they stay in the unhealthy relationship is from feeling frightened that the person who has controlled them and hurt them will take it out on them to a more more serious extent from them leaving and possibly also pressing charges. Due to so many of these women have been controlled, that fear is a strong reason why they don’t find help.
Another situation is when a woman is the victim of a crime, particularly a rape victim. Sometimes their behavior prior to the rape makes them feel like somehow they have been responsible for it happening. For example, if they were intoxicated and wearing sexy clothing, some people may make them feel like they were asking for it. This is one of the big problems in why so many women do not report being raped because society has made them think that] they are at fault when that is absolutely not the case at all.
With more awareness being in addition via the media, women now know it is not their fault and they do not deserve to be hurt or treated that way any longer. Some celebrities have also come forward saying how they were victims of abuse and they will not take it anymore giving other women the strength to do the same.
