Free Poker Online Lesson On How To Roll Over Tight Passive Rocks Style Players
January 27th, 2012 at 07:48 pm by FreshAire in General Fishing ClubsYou’ve arrived at the flop with a decent hand but what do you do next? For most of us postflop play is the weakest part of our game. A key part of postflop play (as with preflop) is knowing the type of players you are up against and playing specifically to counter their style.
In poker, there are 4 different styles of player (tight/loose) + (passive/aggressive). In the free poker and online nanostakes (.02/.05 blinds), each of these player types make a few key mistakes.
In this free poker online lesson we’ll look at how to exploit the Tight-Aggressive style player.
Methods to beat the Tight-passive (TP) “rock”
The Tigght Passive is a common player who you will meet a lot in micro stakes games.
They often limp in as opposed to raising, and while they call as opposed to 3betting (reraising preflop) they don’t play very many hands as a standard.
They’ll rarely raise you postflop without a true nut hand (think sets or better, usually) and won’t call down without hitting a strong piece of the board (typically top pair).
Thankfully, their tendencies also make them simple to play against.
Their ranges are typically limited to pocket pairs and high card hands (KQ, AJ+ for example), so a ton of middling flops (T84r for example) can be cbet basically 100% as we’ll get folds a ton of the time. We should basically be cbetting flops very wide and shutting down on turn/river if called on flop without a good reason for continuing.
Continue betting down after the flop if you have a strong top pair or better. With our draws, we can again check it down until we improve and then bet (although we will rarely get value in those spots).
They are east to play, remember that they only raisxe with premium hands and fold too much so raise and bet a lot of flops to take their money.
Do always remember that there are levels of player types. Some styles share traits with the most closely related group, TAGs with LAG bits, TPs that lean toward LPs and so on, so keep your wits about you and adjust your play per opponents using player style models as a tool to guide observation and decision making.
Learning to recognize player types and the degree to which a player fits a type isn’t easy.
You need to practice your game plenty though for some of you it will come faster than others. If you’re new to poker do not risk much or even any cash as you learn. Start of with the lowest stakes games or with free online poker games and work up from there.
